The Best Kayaking North West
Let’s discover the best places to make a splash…
Kayaking Liverpool
Liverpool is incredibly famous for a lot of things, but its waterfront is maybe not something to spring to the forefront of your mind. However, the Albert Dock is one of the most popular places in Liverpool to kayak as it provides an opportunity to paddle from the centre in Queen’s Dock through the South Liverpool Docklands, passing spectacular sights throughout the journey and capturing aspects you wouldn’t necessarily on foot.
If you’re a beginner or perhaps looking to join a group, Liverpool Watersports Centre offers guided taster sessions, children’s birthday parties and improver classes with an experienced coach.
Looking to improve your skills? Liverpool Watersports centre also provides personal coaching to help improve your performance and make you feel more comfortable on the water.
Kayaking Manchester
If you live or are visiting the Greater Manchester area, Hollingworth Lake in Littleborough is a great option for kayakers.
The vast 130-acre reservoir is a fabulous choice for a fun day out with all the family with scenic picnic areas and beautiful natural surroundings.
Hollingworth Lake Activity Centre provides kayaking courses suitable for complete beginners right through to experienced water sports enthusiasts. You can even take part in fun-filled multi-activity days that include kayaking, raft building, sailing, windsurfing, climbing, archery and mountain biking.
Please note: If you’re kayaking on your own, you need a day or annual permit (available at the Centre’s reception).
Kayaking Chester
Chester is one of the most stunning cities the North West has to offer and the best way to capture its beauty is by kayaking along the famous River Dee with Dee River Kayaking.
Calm Water Kayaking
Calm water kayaking trips take place on spots on the river where there is either still water or a gentle flow.
You can book a private trip that allows you to guide your own journey, or you can opt for an open trip which is a great way to socialise with new like-minded people. All tours are accompanied by an experienced friendly guide, so you can feel safe and confident.
White Water Kayaking
White water kayaking trips take place on spots on a river that fit into the white water classification grades 1-3.
While the grading system actually goes up to 6, these are the only grades you need to consider for now.
- Grade 1: Flowing but not particularly turbulent (for beginners).
- Grade 2: Some turbulent spots (for those looking for a little excitement and fun).
- Grade 3: Generally turbulent with plenty of waves (for thrill-seekers).
Instructors at Dee River Kayaking are highly trained and experienced to give you the best possible introduction to whitewater river kayaking North West adventures.
Whether you’re local to Chester or planning a trip, you can also paddle along a guided tour that spans to Farndon and back, or, if you’re a little more confident, you can create your own route and explore the fascinating waters alone.
Kayaking Cumbria
Cumbrian Kayaking provides a number of paddling experiences that are tailored to meet your requirements, from your first paddle dip to a multi-day tour of Cumbria and the Lake District.
Showcasing the most beautiful landscapes in the North West, Kayaking across Cumbria and the Lake District offers unrivalled escapism. Stunning in all seasons it makes a great choice all year round with the chance to spot local wildlife and provides the opportunity to take in the mountainous views and dreamy skylines.
Kayak equipment advice
- Consider wearing safety equipment such as buoyancy aids, even if you’re a strong swimmer, the water temperature, water flow and accidents can all affect your ability to swim, making a buoyancy aid life-saving.
- Wear appropriate warm clothing for the conditions of your paddle. Don’t risk getting soaking wet and cold in the rain, especially if you’re kayaking for prolonged periods of time.
Do I need a license to go Kayaking?
Canals and inland rivers can be fantastic places to enjoy water sports as waters can be easier to navigate and manage over tidal waters. Nevertheless, many inland rivers in the UK have private restrictions and licensing restrictions. Restrictions can also exist for where land is privately owned, for example, some beaches, where there are stringent environmental protection schemes, or where there are restrictions due to safety.
If you’re looking to go kayaking in your own kayak, be sure to check whether you need a license to paddle there. A Membership of British Canoeing will give you the necessary permissions for most inland waterways in England and Wales.
