If you’re completely new to the world of Dryrobes, don’t worry! We’re here to answer all your burning questions. They were created to provide an easy way to help adventure enthusiasts get changed easily and privately outdoors. The soft inner shell helps dry off swimmers, surfers, and triathletes after coming out of the water. It also helps keep people warm, dry and comfortable while changing or outdoors.

As the Dryrobe has gained popularity, its uses have expanded to include not just watersports enthusiasts but accommodating campers, hikers, outdoor events spectators and dog walkers to keep warm and get full-body protection from the weather.

Is a Dryrobe a coat?

Although a Dryrobe is not technically a coat (it’s a changing robe), it looks and functions like an oversized coat, especially the Dryrobe Advance.

Like a coat, Dryrobes are lined with fleece to keep you warm. Their waterproof and windproof outer layer is similar to an outdoor coat, making them popular for camping trips, watching outdoor sports, or walking the dog on cold, wet days.

However, its oversized form won’t be practical for all outdoor settings where a regular waterproof or fleece-lined coat would do just fine. Its primary use is for changing in and out of clothes outdoors, not for wearing in daily life. It also features short or wide sleeves to aid with changing, which might not be practical for other outdoor scenarios.

So, if you want to wear it as a coat, do so. It will keep you warm and dry. However, if you think its bulky size might make it a hindrance, leave the Dryrobe at home and grab your regular coat instead.

Are Dryrobes fashionable?

Dryrobes are primarily functional pieces rather than fashion items. However, they have developed a certain appeal in outdoor and active lifestyle circles, making them a niche style statement. Whether they’re fashionable or not depends on individual perspective and the context in which they’re worn.

Some might consider Dryrobes fashionable because they appreciate the outdoor lifestyle aesthetic. As they’re associated with active, adventurous people who embrace outdoor activities like wild swimming, surfing, or hiking, this connection to an outdoorsy lifestyle makes them trendy in certain circles.

Dryrobes also have a unique look. Their oversized design, bold branding, and various bold colour and pattern combinations make them stand out and make them feel “fashionable.”

Dryrobes have also been spotted on athletes, outdoor influencers and even at music festivals, adding to their “cool factor”.

However, at the end of the day, Dryrobes are a functional piece of kit; their loose, bulky shape and utilitarian design priorities function over following fashion trends, so they may not align with certain mainstream fashion tastes. They are also made for the specific reason of getting changed, getting dry, and keeping warm, meaning they might look out of place in certain settings where a typical coat or jacket would be a better option.

Like most clothing items, whether a Dryrobe is fashionable depends on your opinion and preferences. If you like the look of one, wear one; if you don’t, that’s completely up to you.

We’ve already touched on the uses and the usefulness of a Dryrobe, but how do you use one to get the most out of it? Here are our top ways to use a Dryrobe.

  1. Wear your Dryrobe over wet or dry clothes. The oversized design makes it easy to wear over bulky layers like wetsuits or sportswear.
  2. Use your Dryrobe to help you get changed outdoors.
  3. Use the large hood to keep your head warm while outdoors or changing.
  4. Use your Dryrobe to warm up and protect yourself from the wind and rain. Use it as a personal shelter after swimming, surfing, running, or hiking to prevent getting chilled.
  5. Use the pockets to store essentials. The waterproof internal and external pockets are large enough to hold your phone, snacks, keys, or a small towel. You can even store your wet clothes in them to keep them separate from your dry ones.
  6. Use before or after activities to stay warm or get dry. Or use it as a warm, weatherproof coat for camping, festivals, or watching outdoor events.

Do you put a Dryrobe on when wet?

Yes, you can absolutely wear a Dryrobe when wet—that’s one of its main purposes! It’s designed to keep you warm after outdoor water-based activities like swimming or surfing. The oversized fit means you can wear it over wet clothes, wetsuits, or swimwear.

The inner lining, made of synthetic fleece, wicks away moisture from your skin, helping you dry off quickly. The lining is designed not to absorb the water, so you can wear it when wet to get warm and dry. Also, the insulation traps heat even when you’re damp, preventing you from getting cold, especially in windy or chilly conditions.

In addition, the outer shell is waterproof and windproof, protecting you from the wind and rain even if you’re wet inside.

If you prefer, you can towel dry yourself before putting on your Dryrobe, but this is unnecessary. However, we recommend putting it on immediately after getting out of the water to avoid getting a chill.

Dryrobes are perfect for situations without indoor changing space or when you need to warm up quickly after being in cold water.

How to change in a Dryrobe

Changing in a Dryrobe is simple and designed to give you privacy even in public places. Here’s how to effortlessly get changed before or after watersports.

1. Prepare your clothes: Lay out the clothes you want to change into so they’re easily accessible. If there isn’t a clean or dry place to lay them down, you can use the giant pockets in your dryrobe.

2. Put your Dryrobe on: Put your Dryrobe over your clothes or wet swimwear and ensure the Dryrobe is fully zipped.

3. Remove clothes: Use your hands inside the Dryrobe to remove the top half of your clothes or wet swimwear. The roomy design and loose arm holes allow easy movement inside the robes. For the bottoms, pull them down while holding the robe in place.

4. Get dry: If you’re changing from wet to dry, use the inner lining of the Dryrobe Advance or the towel material of the Towel Dryrobe to wick away moisture and dry off.

5. Get dressed: Once dry or ready to get into your swimwear, get dressed in your other clothes. For your top half, use your hands inside the Dryrobe. Then, step into your bottoms, one leg and a time, inside the robe.

6. Adjust and exit: Make sure everything is on and comfortable, then remove your Dryrobe fully dressed. Store your wet clothes in a waterproof bag or the pockets of your Dryrobe.

If you’re new to Dryrobes and are nervous about changing outside, practice at home first to gain confidence. Once you get the hang of it, it’s very easy and much more private than trying to change with a towel wrapped around you.

The large hood provides extra warmth while changing. If it’s windy, you can kneel slightly to ensure the robe stays in place.
